🚨 Free Live Training for FP&A Professionals, Controllers, and Finance Teams 🚨

Why Everything That Made Financial Modeling Feel Hard Was Teaching You the Wrong Thing

Financial modeling has a reputation for being hard, and most of that comes from being taught it the wrong way. It is not advanced math, it is structure, and once you see the structure the whole thing gets simpler. I'll show you how I build a model from a blank tab, and then we cover what keeps those numbers clean once the model is done.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Why Your Cash Flow Statement Should Tie on Its Own

The statement of cash flows is the part that breaks for almost everyone, and it is the clearest example of modeling taught the wrong way. I'll show you the method I built my career on: mirror the balance sheet, take the change each period, and let cash flow tie itself. Once the balance sheet balances, it is not possible for cash flow to be off.

The Model That Refreshes in Minutes, Not Days

Inputs scattered across twenty tabs is how a model slowly turns into a mess. I'll show you how one drivers tab and a simple Source, Inputs, Presentation structure let you drop in fresh actuals and have the whole model update on its own. Month end stops being a rebuild.

The Model That Flags Its Own Mistakes

You cannot watch every cell in a large model, so you build something that watches for you. I'll show you the error checks that belong in every model, including a COUNTIFS tripwire that flags any number that drifts off, even a cell someone deleted by accident. The model tells you the moment something moves.

How the Pros Forecast Revenue, Headcount, and the Balance Sheet

Once the foundation is solid, every other layer stacks on top of it. You'll get the frameworks behind the harder pieces: EPN for revenue, the LET function for headcount and pay, and BASE plus waterfall tables for the balance sheet. Enough on each that you leave knowing how the full model fits together.

What Happens to Your Numbers After the Model

A finished model is only half the picture. Part two covers what happens to your numbers next: the approval and payment workflows that sit after the model. You'll see the control gaps that open up when finance moves faster than process, and how to close them without slowing the business down.

This training is for you if:

Skip this one if:

✅ You can use Excel well, but nobody ever actually taught you how a financial model is built

✅ Modeling has always felt harder than it should, and you suspect you are missing something basic

✅ Your model works, mostly, but you could not fully explain why if someone asked

✅ You spend more time keeping the model alive than learning anything from it

✅ You inherited a model and you have been a little afraid to really change it

✅ You want modeling to finally feel like a skill you own, not a thing you wrestle with

❌ You want a finished template to download and never understand

❌ You want pure theory instead of a practical method you can use

❌ You already build models from a blank tab with total confidence and could teach this yourself

❌ You are looking for tax, audit, or bookkeeping training, this session is about modeling and controls

❌ You are not open to changing how you build today

Josh Aharonoff, CPA | Microsoft Excel MVP

I run Mighty Digits, a fractional CFO firm I built to seven figures with a team of more than fifteen. At any given time we manage finance for 35 to 40 startups, including names like Eight Sleep and Chili Piper, and the models we build have helped those companies raise more than $400 million.

Nobody taught me this in school. I learned to build a three statement model on the job, the hard way, and once it finally clicked it became the single most valuable skill of my career. My first client ever hired me for exactly one thing: a model that holds together.

I also run Your CFO Guy, where more than 500,000 people on LinkedIn and around 90,000 newsletter readers follow the way I teach finance and Excel. On May 28, I'll teach modeling the same way I do it for paying clients, so you can see how simple the core of it actually is.

Rafaela Torres, Financial Controller at ApprovalMax

Joining me for part two is Rafaela Torres, Financial Controller at ApprovalMax. A model is only as good as the process around it, and that process is what Rafaela works in every day. She covers what happens to your numbers once they leave the model: the approval and payment workflows where errors quietly creep in, and how to close those gaps without slowing the business down.
